That's A Great Question, Chris
From Catholic Church Conservation

And who is celebrating this Mass, the priest, the other man,
one or more of the two women, the TV or the palm tree?

And some still can't figure out why at so many Novus Ordo parishes, they actually believe that its the priest and the people who consecrate The Eucharist.

If you waddle enough, eventually you'll actually believe you're a duck.

My vote goes for the palm tree!

That guy in white is not even vested correctly for mass. He looks either like a white robed Dominican or some sort of Cistercian. Can't tell for sure.

Actually, the guy in white looks like an Episcopal priest on a "less formal" Sunday. I'm sure I've seen them in similar vestments.

I know that if "all Hell broke loose" and I was in a Detention center, or Reeducation Camp, I'd be happy to attend mass on a card table.

But, since things aren't so bad why do people do this?

I actually had another priest once try to argue this position with my. My response was, "If they don't show up, the Eucharist is still consecrated. If I don't show up, it isn't. End of arguement."

What is the cause of this pov in a priest, Father? Poor seminary training? Willful heterodoxy? Or another reason?

Pictures don't always tell the whole story. This appears to be a Mass celebration in a hotel room, by a visiting Priest carrying smaller Chalice, etc. The Priest just may be serving those who asked for him.

Maybe a "false alarm" this time?

Helen,
For me, it's not so much the locale, it's the posture of the laity. What's with the spread hands a la Consecration? Do these people suddenly feel that they are priests?

That "spread hand" thinmgee is something that's been around for only the last 10 years or so. I've always found it irritating/irreverent.

In this particular case the orans posture is a thing of concern because this is a seemingly Western liturgy. Traditionally, the orans posture is a priestly celebrant's function alone. In the Byzantine East, however, among the Ruthenian ECs, the congregation adopts the orans posture when collectively praying the Lord's Prayer in the Divine Liturgy. So it is a matter of religious culture.

Perhaps the Lord's Prayer is being prayed in this picture. Again, I don't particularly care for it just as I dislike the hand-holding during the Lord's Prayer which is not provided for in the rubrics of the Novus Ordo Missae.
