Stem cell research offers tremendous hope for those suffering from a variety of deadly diseases - hope for both cures and life-extending treatments. However, the compassion to relieve suffering and to cure deadly disease cannot erode moral and ethical principles.
For this reason, John McCain opposes the intentional creation of human embryos for research purposes. To that end, Senator McCain voted to ban the practice of "fetal farming," making it a federal crime for researchers to use cells or fetal tissue from an embryo created for research purposes. Furthermore, he voted to ban attempts to use or obtain human cells gestated in animals. Finally, John McCain strongly opposes human cloning and voted to ban the practice, and any related experimentation, under federal law.
As president, John McCain will strongly support funding for promising research programs, including amniotic fluid and adult stem cell research and other types of scientific study that do not involve the use of human embryos.
Where federal funds are used for stem cell research (Does he mean EMBRYONIC stem cell research?), Senator McCain believes clear lines should be drawn that reflect a refusal to sacrifice moral values and ethical principles for the sake of scientific progress, and that any such research should be subject to strict federal guidelines.

I don't wanna jump the gun, I'm no McCain fanboy, but it seems like he either has, or is preparing to dump support for ESCR.
The last sentence of the third paragraph, then on to the beginning of the fourth, it seems to me he's extending the "...that do not involve the use of human embryos" to the stem cell research that warrant a "refusal to sacrifice moral values and ethical principles..."
I hope it's not just wishful thinking, but that's what seems to be happening to me.
I am speaking as a medical professional, I am a Registered Nurse, RN and have been so for about 30 years. I am also a Catholic who is faithful to our Church's teachings and have been a reader of your site since I found it about six months ago. I have also fought against euthanasia in hospitals and any and all violations of God's law as reiterated by the 'Holy' Catholic Church.
Embryonic stem cell research is the use of embryo's, the unborn baby which might have been aborted or cloned in a petrie dish from an egg and a sperm. It is a tragic violation of God's laws.
Adult stem cell research is using one's own stem cells to potentially help in growing back perhaps....skin, maybe from a burn, a part of one's liver, maybe an appendage like an ear, etc. There is nothing morally wrong with that use/ It is to be applauded and thanks given to God Almighty that HE has provided the intelligence to do that to assist his creature...man.
Please, do not confuse the two. Embryonic stem cell research has not shown any improvements for man. It is the excuse the abortionists give to try and rationalize their murders by the use of the byproducts (the baby). Adult stem cell research is using a human creatures own body to hopefully replace a damaged/injured part.
McCain has changed his stance..probably due to the good influence of Governor Sarah Palin. . Applaud him and thank GOD.

But what has me concerned is McCain's position on embryonic stemm cell research. As Unitas said "he seems...)

I'd like that too, Vir. And I'd very much like that clarification to demonstrate his affirmation of life in all cases.

You must listen very carefully. I am ever hopeful that someone will ask the pointed questions during debates.
Botu is very correct reporting that Embryonic stem cell research has produced nothing whil adult stem cells has been very bountiful. I can only surmise that this is by the direction of God and how he will take care of these nincompoops that instist on using Embryos.
Regardless until McCain renounces CLEARLY his support of ESCR I will not be voting for him. Also he will have to do one more thing before I can vote for him, he has to make a commitment to reduce the national debt and give back power to the states.
