Much acclaimed film expert (*nota bene - not ecclesiastical garb expert) Franco Zefirelli, recently asked to assist in overhauling the papal image (yeah - B.XVI comes across as WAY too nice!) is quoted as saying that the Pope comes across "coldly" and needs a "happy image."

To add insult to dumb-assness, the same 1970's quasi-flesh tease period piece guru has deemed that the Holy Father's "wardrobe" (try "sacred vesture" you, idiot!) is in need of "review" because it is "too sumptuous and flashy".

Somebody in the Italian Mafia - please take care of this jackass!

I say the Holy Father isn't flashy enough!

Vetus, I have to ask -- how can Zefirelli possibly be saved after the Mafia has done him in?
And before impugning the the wisdom of our last three popes, you may wish to consider their reasons for not wearing the tiara, and (in Papa Ben's case) not including it in his coat of arms.

There was probably a good reason not to wear the tiara. but I do wish that there was some way or other to make those bishops who value their fame and power over their office to be obedient to Christs Vicar on Earth.

Which is to say--be Catholic

Amen! And how about the sedia gestatoria, too? (At least for short distances -- the "Pope mobile is OK as well as practical for longer distances.)

PS Welcome aboard!

Please spare me that paltry attemtp at condescension regarding what I "may wish to consider" - and much worse - Do NOT, sir, assume motives which you accuse me of impugning. I am well aware of the previous popes' reasons for dispensing with the tiara. Rather than speculation about papal motivations, one may wonder, instead, about your own personal agenda. Such wondering should not occupy too much time, however, since your own words are as transparent as they are naive.

Don't even start with me - for your own sake.

To the others - thanks so much for the warm welcome. Benedicat vos omnipotens Deus. + + +

Vetus Melius Est-Welcome aboard!!! You will enjoy being part of the Cave Express.

As a convert (former imploding Anglican) and as the sort of "Rad-Trad" that all progressives hate, I admit that my tremendous respect and love for our current Holy Father makes me hope that he not only celebrates the Extraordinary form (High Mass) at St. Peter's soon, but also brings back the Tiara.

I too believe I know why Paul VI and JPII decided to not wear it. But I also believe those mistaken reasons are part and parcel of why we have gutted so much of what was beautiful about Holy Mother Church.

Again, welcome aboard.

I'm not out to be condescending. Asking you to think about it is the limit of my request. Seriously, though -- how can I interpret your demand that the tiara be brought back, but as impugning the wisdom of the Popes who decided to forgo it? How is it not claiming that your own is superior?

As for my motivations --

First, souls. There's not a person anywhere on this earth whose soul I would not want saved, though I do my best to start with my own. I include even Seventh Day Adventists, Fred Phelps, the Communist Party of the People's Republic of China, Britney Spears and Franco Zefirelli. Once somebody's dead, they get no more chances at salvation, and I think that's tragic.

Second, love of others. I'm truly glad that you and the other Bloglodytes love and promote the Extraordinary Form. I eagerly look forward to the many graces and blessings that will result from its wider use. I admire your great fidelity to so many doctrines that are so often neglected or even denigrated, even by clergy. But in your zeal to protect and promote those doctrines, there's a marked tendency, on this blog, to neglect Christ's command to love our enemies, and to emulate His love for His enemies.

Third: I'm getting sick of everyone who thinks the Pope isn't enough like themselves and/or second guesses him; Zefirelli because Papa Ben needs a "happy image," (when the man smiles in nearly every photo, especially when dealing with others), or you because he "isn't flashy enough." Have some faith in God, and in His Vicar on Earth!

er, and prevat2, Paul VI did wear the tiara. I was speaking of Pope John Paul and Pope John Paul II.
