Totally Clueless
I know your worried about that hemorrhoid, but why are you ingoring the cancer?

Archbishop Jose Gomez of San Antonio, Texas said most Catholic politicians in the United States have fallen into "a distorted understanding of what their faith is." http://www.cwnews.com/news/viewstory.cfm?recnum=40886

Huh... what? Hey Your Excellency, have you checked out some of the things said and done by your own fellow bishops? Do I REALLY have to bring up such stellar examples of firm Catholic moral teaching and example like:

1. Cardinal "You Can't Touch Me Now, I'm In Rome" Law
2. Cardinal "You'll Never See The Files of the Rapists I Protected" Mahoney
3. Archbishop Rembert "A Half Million Dollars To Keep My Boyfriend Quite Is Nothing!" Weakland
4. Bishop Thomas "I can't differentiate between Mexicans and dogs" O'Brien

Do I REALLY need to go on? I do appriciate the fact that he is at least trying. But his efforts would fall on more receptive ears if he took care of the wolves in the parlor first, and then alerted us about the weasles in the yard.

One other thing, the good Archbishop is rightly worried about Catholic politicians who have "a distorted understanding of what their faith is"... but Your Excellency, who do you think taught these goombas their theology (or lack thereof) in the first place? For the answer, just look to your left and to your right at the next Annual USCCB Group Hug and Circle Jerk.

Great assessment Non Sum Dignus. I remember a comment saintly author Father John Hardon (RIP) made to a Catholic journalist in the late 1980's. He said that he knew of only 5 or 6 bishops in the U.S. who were totally loyal to the teachings of Christ. So what are the odds that we have a totally loyal bishop? We will know them by their fruits.

I think that Abp Gomez needs to define *explictly* what HIS faith is. Is it the neo-Protestantism promulgated by the post-Vatican II church, or is it the traditional Faith as taught by Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Fathers and Doctors of the Church? Because, as far as his quote is concerned, it is meaningless if he is criticising Catholic American politicians for not 'understanding' neo-Protestantism.

Pax Domini, etc.

Cut Bishop Gomez some slack, he seems to be lightyears ahead of some of the other bishops.

Furthemore he is refering to unchanging Church teachings on Abortion and such that did not change in the 1960's, not the changes in the Mass.

No can do, FD, my friend. It's precisely because we've been cutting these bishops slack, that we're in the mess we're in now.

I will agree that he "seems" to be lightyears ahead... but he certainly doesn't have his priorities straight.

Like I said, we need to be more worried about the wolf in the parlor than the weasle in the yard.

By the way... have you come up with any interesting readings on Catholics in The Corps?

FD,

What is Abp Gomez's stance on the Transubstantiation? On OEcumenism? On Modernism?

Just because he champions "unchanging Church teachings on Abortion" doesnt make him a sterling example of traditional Catholicism. Afterall, there are a lot of Protestants who champion "unchanging Church teachings on Abortion".

You guys do raise some good points, the "wolf in the parlor" is a lot more dangerous than the weasles. However, I still stand by cutting the Bishop some slack. Sure there is a long way to go but things take time. You wouldn't hack down a sappling merely because its not a towering Oak. While the changes of 60's and 70's may seem earthshattering to us in a few centuries the confusion of this period will be a blip on the radar. Untill that time comes I am happy to hear what Gomez has to say.

As a matter of fact I am reading right now about US Marines in World War I. I will also do a little more online reading on the four men you mentioned. I also might pick up the stamps. I did some stamp collecting when I was like 10 so its been a while but these ones might be worth adding.
