Why We'll Lose The War On Terror
As long as we have idiots like this calling the shots (or NOT calling the shots, as the case may be)

A Predator drone armed with missiles snapped a photo of 190 Taliban attending a funeral in Afghanistan. According to news reports, American officers were salivating at a chance to zap 190 bad guys in one fell swoop.

But that would make too much sense. Some scrotally challenged maggot nixed the attack on the grounds that an attack on a cemetery were a violation of the rules of engagement. Undoubtedly, this freakin' moron will make general someday.

But in the meantime, I could give a damn less if they were in a cemetery... grease the bastards.

Here's the problem in a nutshell...

they are trying to fight a politically correct war

those two terms do not go together

no such thing as a politically correct war

if you go to war, you give them everything you've got, until you win

if you are not willing to do that, then you are...well...that makes you French

While I agree that the situation posed a very promising military advantage, depending on whether the funeral attendants could be classified as combatants or noncombatants would not only change whether or not the execution was within the US military rules of engagement but also whether or not it was within the boundaries of Catholic Just War Theory. So it's possible that the decision may have been morally justified.

Shawn,
And it's just possible that this is yet another case of PC run amok, further illustrating why we'll eventually lose this war if we have spineless cowards calling the shots.

Let's be honest... do you really think anyone had the Catholic Just War Theory cross their mind in deciding not to kill these troorrists, or just possibly were they worried about "image" and political correctness?

Didn't a certain movie on ABC just get the Dems all up in arms about being too PC in going after Bin Laden?

This seems to me some sort of payback for making Clinton look like the distracted buffoon he was.

Chris, the problem is also that BUSH can't win. No matter what he does - he bombs the Taliban and the funeral, he doesn't bomb them - the left is going to come out in droves to criticize HIM as the terrorist.

I dont think anyone had the Just War theory in mind when they invented this whole war in the first place. ;-)

Well, since our modern day rules of engagement are heavily influenced by medieval interpretation of the Just War theory of St. Ambrose and St. Augustine, I would answer your questions as, "yes, indirectly."

Regardless, it seems that as Catholics the Just War theory must be the primary criteria in our discernment of whether or not the decision in question was morally appropriate. Yes, they may have been just trying to be PC, but was the choice objectively morally superior, despite the subjective intention?

Look, I want us to win too, hopefully creating some level of peace and welfare for the common good, but it seems to me that committing the same crimes that we charge against our enemy is immoral and incredibly imprudent, victory or not.

Incorrect. the nodern day rules of engagement are heavily influenced by polls, "feelings", and political correctness/expediency. In a perfect world, the writings of theSaints would have a direct and profound impact, but as this latest episode further illustrates, the big-boys in charge are more concerned with how we'll look on the so-called "Arab Street", than actually winning.

Greasing said bad guys morally appropriate? Absolutely. Please keep in mind that they were at a funeral for a "fallen comrade". Again, in a perfect world, we would engage these individuals in open battle... well, maybe not. Open battle isn't exactly their forte, is it? Don't they attack and kill during events such as, oh... let's say... funerals? To hit them while they attended a Taliban version of a military funeral was and is wholly morally appropriate and proportionate.

Look, I want us to win too, hopefully creating some level of peace and welfare for the common good, but it seems to me that committing the same crimes that we charge against our enemy is immoral and incredibly imprudent, victory or not.

Crimes? You are joking, aren't you? By virtue of them simply being the enemy, they're a valid military target (with very few exceptions). You give the impression that there is some sort of antiseptic battlefield out there where everything is "just so", and rules are never broken, and "peace and welfare for the common good" are just around the corner. Well, on second thought, all those things are possible. And the enemy has already proven that the only way they will ever stop fighting is if we capture them or kill them. So be it.

Allow me to remind you Shawn, this is a harsh world, with lot's of evil men in it. And the Taliban rate right up there on the "Need To Be Taken Out" meter. These are the same guys that jail little kids and beat them regularly for the high crime of flying kites. Don't think for a minute that these fine fellows wouldn't bat an eyelash if they had the chance to slice your or my wife's throat wide open.

Should we kill the wolf while it is sleeping or feeding, or do we wait until it's at out throat?

In the Name of Christian Charity, how many more 9/11's do we have to experience until we collectivly wake up and fight this war like we intend to win it?

Peace had it's chance.
