I am aware of no canon law requiring permission before changing rites. In any event, simply attending a Byzantine Rite parish is perfectly acceptable. The Sacrament of the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of the Lord in either rite, is it not?Constantinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09896634456011028503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18853193.post-42238977105779388432008-11-16T02:02:00.000-05:002008-11-16T02:02:00.000-05:00pulling it into the "partisan political arena...pulling it into the "partisan political arena."

The sound you hear in response to this line is that of Ss Thomas More, Thomas`a Beckett, John Fisher, Stanslaus, John the Baptist & many an OT prophet turning over in their graves.Alhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07721319432213055605noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18853193.post-76966751961012738112008-11-15T17:31:00.000-05:002008-11-15T17:31:00.000-05:00Christ gives everyone "the freedom to explore our ...Christ gives everyone "the freedom to explore our own conscience and to make our own decisions while adhering to the law of God and the teachings of the faith."

WHAT PART of "while adhering to the law of God and the teachings of the faith" does the Msgr. He was was the greatest champion of Catholic belief on the subject of the Incarnation that the Church has ever known and while still alive earned the title of "Father of Orthodoxy." Although I don't think there was yet a Western and an Eastern Church yet within the umbrella of the univeral Roman Catholic Church, St. Athanasius would very likely have been a Coptic. Nevertheless, the didn't stay home in Alexandria and keep his own flock loyal to the teachings of the Church. No, he took on most of the bishops of his day, was even excommunicated for awhile, until he was proven right. The point being, regardless of what rite one commonly practices, we are all members of the Catholic Church and, once confirmed, are warriors for the Church Militant. The gift of fortitude isn't for ostriches.

VSC,
You are partially correct. A Catholic belongs to the rite into which he/she was baptized. Although one is free to worship at any Catholic church, regardless of rite, you cannot transfer into another rite without your bishop's permission. (Not sure whether the "receiving" bishop would have to also concur.)Former Altar Boyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08751535074291354836noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18853193.post-75504310164038152552008-11-15T15:39:00.000-05:002008-11-15T15:39:00.000-05:00Leo,I have a deep respect for our Eastern Rite Cat...Leo,
I have a deep respect for our Eastern Rite Catholic Churches. I've attened Melkite, Ukrainian, and Chaldean Catholic Liturgies in the past, and hope to again in the future. After all, we all are loyal to The Bishop of Rome!

If there were an Eastern Rite Catholic parish in the earea, I probably would attend on at least a semi-regular basis.

You know...a Chaldean or Melkite Liturgy celebrated in the ancient Aramaic, the Ukrainian celebrated in ancient Slavonic, or the Traditional Mass celebrated in Latin are all things of beauty.

But I seem to recall reading somewhere that Canon Law prohibits "changing Rites" (for lack of a better phrase).

As my buddy Vir Simplex so eloquently pointed out, I gotta stick with fighting to clean-up the Latin Rite!Kevin Whitemanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07019976622801954677noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18853193.post-6159912418401536082008-11-15T15:14:00.000-05:002008-11-15T15:14:00.000-05:00Leo, The Church Militant does not abandon here whe...Leo,

The Church Militant does not abandon here when the seas are rough.
