The Catholic Bishops of Egypt have decided not to call upon the new government to rescind Article 2 of Egypt's constitution, which declares Islam to the state religion.
Article 2 specifically states, "Islam is the religion of the state. Arabic is its official language, and the principal source of legislation is Islamic jurisprudence (Sharia)."
According to Coptic Catholic Bishop Kyrillos William of Assiut;"We will never ask for its abolition because it would [injure] the feelings of Muslims. In the future we will ask to add some assurances for the non-Muslim communities." Read more...

Gutless bishops, it's not just for America or Europe anymore! Sad.
I disagree. The bishops in the middle east have flocks immersed in a sea of anti-Christian whackos with a long history of murder. It is like a gigantic hostage situation that lasts for generations. The bishops there have reason to speak cautiously.
The bishops of America and Europe, by contrast, have little excuse for not speaking forthrightly.

And the Orthodox Copts? They took a courageous stand. Why couldn't the Coptic Rite Catholics?
Michael, if the Catholic Copt bishops don't speach out, the Muslims will reguard that as a sign of weakness, and treat them as weaklings.
