Memorial Day, 2010

Father (Lt.) Vincent R. Capodanno, USN, CMOH, Servant of God
FINALLY, a Patron Saint for the Marine Corps?

Excellent article concerning the cause for Sainthood has formally been opened for Medal of Honor awarded "Grunt Padre". I know that my eldest brother will be happy to hear this... he was a 0331 (Marine Corps machine gunner) in Viet-Nam, who served more than one Mass for Fr. Capodanno.

The second posting I ever did on this blog was concerning Father Capodanno and his possible Canonization. Deo Gratis his cause has been officially opened. If you're curious, there I have posted his Medal of Honor citation.

Unfortunately, the news story from Catholic News Service has some errors. Father Capodanno wasn't killed by a sniper... he was killed by a communist North Viet-Namese machine gunner less than 5 feet away from him, as Fr. Capodanno was trying to save the life of a dying comrade. Also the writer committed a cardinal sin against Marines... he referred to Marines as "soldiers".

Anyhow, to read about Fr. Capodanno in the words of those who served with him, go here. Below is a bit of the recollection by Former Marine Ray Harton, Mike Company, 3/5 (3d Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment).

If this doesn't bring a tear to your eye, there's something wrong with you.

Sometime late afternoon we heard scattered fire, we had stopped close to a small hill. Sgt. Peters came running up and told us 1st Platoon had been hit hard and we were going to help them. We ran some, walked some and approached the top of the hill and the carnage started. All I can remember is Sgt. Peters screaming, "Get that Gun!" and I was hit in the left arm that spun me to the ground, another shot shattered my rifle. I was screaming, along with other members of my squad, we were being shot at every move we made.

The machine gun was close, 15 to 25 yards away, in a thicket, part way down the far slope of the small hill or knoll I called it. This very hard for me. I can remember seeing the North Vietnamese troops moving and coming toward me, there were Marines lying all around me, and I was calling for help, while with every beat of my fast pumping heart, my life blood was spurting on the ground. I could hear someone holler "Corpsman!" but every time I would move, that gun would shoot at me, and the other Marines. At a distance, I could see Doc Leal moving from Marine to Marine, and he was looking at me. I knew I was going to die, I was not able to defend myself, and the NVA were coming after me, that was my fear.

Through all the noise and hearing myself scream, someone touched me. I had rolled myself on my left side to put pressure on my left arm and elbow, and someone touched me, it was Fr. Vince. As I looked into his eyes, all things got silent. Not a sound could be heard. No screaming, nothing but the sound of his soft voice, and the look of compassion in his eyes. "Stay calm Marine, someone will be here to help, God is with all of us this day!"

I could see Sgt. Peters laying on the ground, blood coming from his mouth, Corpsman Leal moving in my direction, but I was not scared any longer. I was at peace. Fr. Vince was bare headed, blood on his face and neck, his right hand was mangled with a bloody compress hastily attached. He cupped the back of my head in an attempt to raise me off my arm, when all of a sudden I heard a scream, "my leg, my leg!" and I was back in the war. I glanced over and Corpsman Leal was sitting on the ground screaming about 25 feet from me. Fr. Vince blessed me with his good hand and leaped up and darted to Corpsman Leal. I had come to my senses and was ready to fight, the words "Get that gun!" were still ringing in my head. I made an attempt to move when that gun opened up once more, not at me, but had caught Fr. Vince and Corpsman Leal and ended their lives, a long burst killed my savior, and my friends. Fr. Vince was gone, that image remains foremost in my mind today. And the guilt of being the cause of this God-Like Soul's death haunts me today. I got mad at God and mad at the enemy. I will not go into what happened later between me and that [enemy] gun [crew].

Sister Mary Knucklebuster Strikes
In it's entirety from The Daily Caller
Pittsburgh nun foils wallet theft with reprimand

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh thief turned out to be no match for a little nun with a commanding voice.

Sister Lynn Rettinger didn’t even have to break out a ruler for a man who reached into an opened car window and stole a wallet Tuesday. She just needed the tone of voice she’s used for nearly 50 years in Catholic schools.

After a teacher saw the man swipe the wallet, the 5-foot-3 principal of Sacred Heart Elementary School went outside and firmly told the man: “You need to give me what you have.”

The thief turned over the wallet, apologized and walked away.

Rettinger said she merely talked to him as she would to students when she knows they have something they shouldn’t.

Police are still looking for the man.

But I laughed until I cried

Just In Time For Memorial Day
The entire article from CNA;

St. Michael statue stolen from US Marine’s gravestone in New York

The family of former Marine Corporal David Woods, who died in May 2008, had chosen the marble statue of St. Michael because he is patron saint of the military.

The Olean Times Herald reports that the statue was stolen from St. Bonaventure Cemetery sometime between Saturday and Sunday. It depicts the archangel holding a gray metal sword and stepping on Lucifer’s head. It is between three and four feet tall and valued at $2,500.

A replica from Italy, the statue had been blessed by a Catholic priest. The thief or thieves broke the object from its base.

Diane Hendrix, Woods’ sister, told WIVB News that her whole family, including Woods’ 97-year-old grandmother, had pooled their money to buy the statute.

"One of the things he was most proud of was being a Marine and serving his country. So it was just natural that we got a statue of St. Michael the Archangel who was the patron saint of the military."

"It was such a comforting symbol of what he had accomplished in his life, and our faith."

New York State Police are investigating the theft.

News From The Other Side Of The Pond
From my favorite Brit writer, Damien Thompson
Anxieties over the Papal visit to Britain
By Damian Thompson

There are some good omens for the Pope’s visit to Britain in September. We now know that some (not all) of the music at the Papal Masses in Coventry and Glasgow will be worth hearing, thanks to the decision to perform James MacMillan’s lovely new Mass setting (but, my goodness, those old trendies fight hard: led by Mgr Gerry Fitzpatrick, Glasgow’s musical bureaucrats did everything in their power to get their stuff performed instead. Imagine if the poor Pope had been forced to listen to this). Also, it’s likely that, by the time the Holy Father visits, the Vatican will have announced long overdue worldwide guidelines for the handling of allegations of sexual misconduct. So that should do something to appease public opinion, though I’d lay good money on a certain newspaper dredging up an abuse story just as the papal plane touches down.

What I am picking up, however, is a lot of discontent in Catholic circles at the restrictions on numbers at the Papal Masses – 400,000 combined – which seem to have been imposed by Labour’s health and safety fascists and embraced readily by the papal visit’s politically correct organiser, Mgr Andrew Summersgill.

There is one good argument in favour of restricting the size of the Papal Masses, and that is the embarrassing possibility that not enough people will show up. The ridiculous (and risky) proposal to have Susan Boyle sing in Glasgow is motivated by worries about bums on seats, I’m told by a Scottish Church insider. But I have a feeling that Britain’s Catholics could surprise us, as Portugal’s Catholics did, by turning out in unexpectedly large numbers. They know that Pope Benedict XVI has been subjected to vicious smears in the media; this is their opportunity to stand up and be counted.

If the Church lets them. Mgr Summersgill’s talk of “participating” by watching the Pope on television or online has irritated ordinary Catholics who are also being asked to fork out for the cost of the visit, and some English parish priests are worried that their parishes will be allocated very few tickets to attend the Beatification Mass. Here’s an email I received this week from a non-partisan, loyal, not especially traditionalist priest:

Damian, how would one go about a freedom of information request to see whether it’s true that the Government (rather than Andrew Summersgill) have put a limit on numbers permitted to see the Pope?

I think ordinary Catholics are wondering why they are simultaneously being told to pay for the Papal visit and that they can’t go to see him! So far my parish has been allocated 1 ticket!

If we obey the bishops and all stay at home the only ones on the streets will be protesters.

One ticket? For a really thriving parish, too. That can’t be right. Unfortunately, the Magic Circle loves nothing better than health and safety regulations and “best practice” and all that public sector malarkey. Perhaps the new Government should take the lead, and relax the rules. Failing that, Catholics could always turn up without tickets. That would send a powerful message to Eccleston Square’s control freaks – and to the secular world.

The ghost of luther speaks

The article in its entirety from Catholic Culture;
Jesuit head of Asian Catholic news agency criticizes transubstantiation
May 25, 2010

Stating that “Catholics can become fanatical about one form of the Body of Christ in the bread of the Eucharist as the REAL presence of Christ,” Father Michael Kelly, the Jesuit CEO of the Asian Catholic news agency UCA News, criticized the doctrine of transubstantiation in a May 24 column.

In his column-- a critique of the new, more accurate liturgical translations that reflect the content and dignity of the original Latin-- Father Kelly writes:

Regrettably, all too frequently, the only Presence focused on is Christ’s presence in the elements of bread and wine. Inadequately described as the change of the “substance” (not the “accidents”) of bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, the mystery of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist carries the intellectual baggage of a physics no one accepts. Aristotelian physics makes such nice, however implausible and now unintelligible, distinctions. They are meaningless in the post-Newtonian world of quantum physics, which is the scientific context we live in today.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church, on the other hand, teaches:

The Council of Trent summarizes the Catholic faith by declaring: "Because Christ our Redeemer said that it was truly his body that he was offering under the species of bread, it has always been the conviction of the Church of God, and this holy Council now declares again, that by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation." (no. 1376)

A Pentecost Monday lesson: “And Paul VI wept.”

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULA
Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 9:58 pm

Years ago I told this Pentecost Monday tale and it has made the rounds.

It stands being repeated.

I think this stands as a lesson for what happens when we lose sight of continuity.

Take this for what it may be worth. Some years ago I was told this story by an elderly, retired Papal Ceremoniere or a Master of Ceremonies who (according to him) was present at the event about to be recounted.

You probably know that in the traditional Roman liturgical calendar the mighty feast of Pentecost had its own Octave. Pentecost was a grand affair indeed, liturgically speaking. In some places in the world such as Germany and Austria Pentecost Monday, Whit Monday as the English call it, was a reason to have a civil holiday, as well as a religious observance.

The Monday after Pentecost in 1970 His Holiness Pope Paul VI rose bright and early and went to the chapel for Holy Mass. Instead of the red he expected, there were green vestments laid out for him.

He queried the MC assigned that day, "What on earth are these for? This is the Octave of Pentecost! Where are the red vestments?"

"Santità," quoth the MC, "this is now Tempus ‘per annum’. It is green, now. The Octave of Pentecost is abolished."

"Green? That cannot be!", said the Pope, "Who did that?"

"Holiness, you did."

And Paul VI wept.

They're Called "Spiritual Exercises" For A Reason
Ahhhh..... that's why!

The other day I was sitting in my doctor's office waiting on the results of my monthly blood draw and tests. As I thumbed through some fitness magazine, I read a quote from a tri-athlete in training that I think easily parallels to prayer.

He was asked in training ever gets easier;
"It never gets easier, you just get stronger."
Getting What They Deserve
No... getting what we deserve

In an article from The California Catholic Daily, it's pointed out that a CINO college has invited a pro-abortion political hack to be their commencment speaker.

Until those in position of authority get off their collective duffs, nothing will change.

And we, the faithful Catholics of the laity, have an obligation to sound the clarion call over this.

Here;s some of the article from CCD;
“Clearly at odds with fundamental Catholic teachings”
St. Mary’s College chooses pro-abortion, Prop. 8 foe as commencement speaker

“The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.” -- “Catholics in Political Life,” USCCB, June 2004

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell, a career politician who during 20 years in the state legislature compiled a nearly perfect pro-abortion, pro-Planned Parenthood voting record, spoke yesterday at commencement exercises for graduate and professional programs students at St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga.

O’Connell’s selection as commencement speaker gives California the dubious distinction of having four of the nine Catholic colleges and universities nationwide identified by the Cardinal Newman Society as having invited spring commencement speakers “whose public positions and actions are clearly at odds with fundamental Catholic teachings.”

The Constitutional Rights they don't want to showcase
I dare you

What does abortion and illegal immigration have in common? Supporters... and vocal ones at that. Very vocal.

On a daily basis we are subjected to phonies that jump all over the politically correct, safe and oh, so stylish bandwagons that are illegal immigration and the hacking to death of unborn children.

And what a curious grab bag these phonies are. Ranging from octogenarian WASP hippies, to punk Vatos, to every conceivable, imaginable, bleating, screeching, nightmarish, boorish ObaManiac in between.

But I digress... I won't get into the ins-and-out of the abortion and/or illegal immigration debates.

Let me just say this: we Americans love to show-off our Constitutional Rights. You name it -- awards for writing; trophies for firearms marksmanship; sporting "I Voted" stickers on our shirts on election day, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

Almost a national mania to tell Urkel, "Yes, I did that."

Wellll.... lemme take that back. We American love to show-off the end results of our Constitutional Rights.

With that said, I have two challenges;

1. At the next pro-illegal alien rally, I challenge the organizers to trot out an unemployed American construction worker. Allow him to explain in detail how illegal immigration has cost him his livelihood, his home and his ability to feed his family.

2. At the next pro-abortion rally, perform an abortion. When finished, display the slashed and bloody corpse by the ankles Aztec/Celtic/Mesopotamian-style before the adoring crowd.
If you good people are so proud of what you so loudly advocate, then you should unashamedly show to the world the end result of what you are so steadfastly devoted to.

Go ahead, I dare you.

In Response to ATI

Arkanabar T'verrick Ilarsadin queried my post on the USCCB's collective attitude toward illegal immigration. ATI's is curious, if I could write law and policy what would I write. It is a good question. I will attempt to provide a framework of what I would do in form of law only. Policy would take much more time to develop as it includes actions for implementation, monitoring, prosecution, and defense. Basically it is as follows:

1. The act of encouraging/assisting immigrants to illegally cross our borders is a treasonous act against this nation, and should be prosecuted immediately and punishment to the extent of the law. This includes providing employment or safe haven of any kind (aiding and abetting).

2. All persons wishing to immigrate to the USA must do the following; renounce citizenship in the country they are immigrating from, learn the English language, pass a basic citizenship test, have employment lined up, and can not apply for government assistance in their first five years as a citizen.

3. If you are or have ever been a member of a Socialist, Communist, or other Dictatorial governments or organizations you will not be granted citizenship, or temporary work visas...EVER.

4. You must wait until your application for citizenship is approved before you can relocate.

5. Children of illegal immigrants carry the same status as their parents regardless of where they are born.

6. Once you have citizenship, if you immigrate to another country your American citizenship is permanently revoked and will never be granted again.

In my opinion citizenship in this country is of high market value. People of this country throughout history have given their lives, fortunes, and talents to bring it into existence and develop the only truly free society that man has ever known (besides Eden of course). We have done our best to screw this up in recent history, and part of that problem has been the unwillingness to secure our borders. We are not opposed to immigrants we are opposed to those who choose to take by passive force that which does not belong to them.

It is correct that immigrants have helped to build this nation, and that is because they WANTED to be here and be American. They did not come here to take away what ever they could, they came to contribute to be a part of something grand. The days of hyphenated nationalities and celebrations of other cultures should come to an end because all it does is create divisions. There is only one thing above America and that is God.

Please Keep Philip In Your Prayers
In Caritate Non Ficta

Phil is a young man I know - a former Naval Officer and current seminarian who is fighting brain cancer.

Please remember Phil in your prayers.
Medical UpdateI would like to give all readers an update on my health and ask for your prayers. Most of you know that I have just finished my first year at St. Charles seminary, and for the past 15 months I have been taking chemotherapy for brain cancer. Unfortunately, recent tests upon returning to North Carolina revealed that one area of the tumor has begun to grow.

I have consulted many doctors, and they recommend that I begin a treatment of three drugs that are currently being researched to treat brain cancer - Bevacizumab, Irinotecan, and Carboplatin. Two of these are harsh chemotherapy drugs with very unpleasant side effects, and there are significant risks of internal bleeding and blood clots involved when taking them. If I respond to the initial treatments, I will receive these IV injections every other week for the next year.

My bishop has released me from my original Summer parish assignment in Wilmington, and instead he has given me the "assignment" to pray for the Church and diocese while I undergo these treatments. I will likely be living at the Sacred Heart parish rectory in Dunn, NC for much of the Summer, at the kind invitation of Fr. Parkerson, to be close to my friends and family. I ask you to please pray for me as I begin these treatments, and that my health will permit me to return to the seminary in the Fall. Please be assured of my prayers for you all as well!
Watered Down, Raleigh-Style
Kinda slipped, huh?

In an article by Msgr. Michael Clay asking for a pro-life license plate, he kind of slips. Here's some of the piece from the official website of the Diocese of Raleigh; (Emphasis mine)

In response, it has been recommended that those who would like to petition for a pro-choice plate, such as the kind available in Hawaii and Montana, simply find a sponsor to introduce the plate to the legislature.Did he just say "pro-choice"?

Doesn't he mean pro-slaughter? Pro-holocaust works as well. Pro-infanticide sounds legalistic, but works. Even better -- pro-hacking babies to death.

ANYTHING but "pro-choice". That antiseptic, air-of-legitimacy phrase is reserved for the the abortion crowd so they don't have to face the reality of what abortion is. Like I said... it's very antiseptic.

Oh, and while I'm at it, why does Msgr. Clay bring this up in the same article? (Emphasis mine)

Some in the legislature have deemed the [pro-life] plate “too controversial.” That seems odd when one considers that the somewhat contentious Sons of Confederate Veterans plate emblazoned with the flag of the Confederacy has been approved. As a descendant of a Union soldier, I must ask: what in the hell does the Confederate flag have to do with this?

Absolutely nothing, that's what. I know a liberal cheap-shot when I see one.

Msgr. Clay obviously doesn't know that Bishop Patrick Lynch of Charleston, South Carolina was the Confederate Ambassador to The Papal States. And I'll bet you five push-ups that the good Monsignor doesn't know that the last man to be awarded the Confederate Medal of Honor was... wait for it... a Catholic priest.

Yes, Father Emmeran Bliemel was buried under that very same flag that Msgr. Clay describes as "contentious".

Shameful and insulting to the thousands of Catholics who fought for a cause that even Pope Pius IX believed in.

I certainly hope that Msgr. Clay's theology is better than his history.

The USCCB Decides To Be Catholic
Is this the part where I'm suppose to thank them?

Let the back-slapping and group hugs begin - The USCCB finally had their testicles drop and stood up (and walked away from) an anti-Catholic group of thugs.

Gee, thanks guys. Pardon me if I don't fall all over myself rushing to congratulate you.

Here's some of the article from LifeSiteNews.com; (Emphasis mine)
U.S. Bishops Withdraw from Pro-Abortion, Homosexualist Civil Rights Coalition

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 19, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has pulled out of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition that lobbies against pro-life and pro-family legislation and boasts top pro-abortion and homosexualist groups among its members.

The break was confirmed in a release sent to LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) by Sister Mary Ann Walsh, USCCB Director of Media Relations, on Wednesday afternoon.

The release stated that the bishops withdrew following the group's published support for the pro-abortion and homosexualist Supreme Court nominee, Solicitor General Elena Kagan, which was pointed out earlier this week by Deal Hudson of Catholic Advocate and reported by LSN Tuesday. (Gee, the USCCB didn't already know this stuff? Guess not.)

In withdrawing from the coalition, the USCCB "reiterated its commitment to oppose discrimination based on race, religion, sex, ethnicity, disabling condition, or age, and said that these are grave injustices and affronts to human dignity."
(Don't know 'bout you, but I just love the "we're still liberal!" qualifier here.)

Sorry if I sound skeptical... but the USCCB makes me want to vomit. I'm through with them.

Homosexual activists plan to disrupt Masses worldwide on Pentecost Sunday

A self-described group of “gay Catholics” has announced plans to don the colors of the homosexual rights movement and attempt to receive Communion at cathedrals across the world on Pentecost Sunday.

The group, the Rainbow Sash Movement, said in an announcement posted on its website that it was targeting cathedrals so the activists could come face to face with bishops “to clarify a misunderstanding based on homophobic notions of LGBT People.”

“On Pentecost Sunday, May 23, members and supporters of the Rainbow Sash Movement will be entering Cathedrals nationally and internationally,” says a statement by the group’s board of directors posted on its website. “As is our tradition we will put Rainbow Sashes on when the Liturgy begins. The Rainbow Sash self identifies us Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender people and our allies.”
Will LA Boycott California?
Joyfully stolen from NewsRealBlog.com

Here’s a question for the L.A City Council, California school districts who are canceling trips to Arizona, and those sanctimonious San Franciscans in their Sanctuary City.

What state’s penal code does the following section come from?

(b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the following:
(1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding documentation to indicate his or her legal status.
That would be… California!

Oops.

The only real difference between Arizona and California on the “show me your papers” front is that in Arizona they no longer call I.C.E. and get sluffed off, they enforce the law themselves.

Which means none of the reasons given by California liberals for opposing the Arizona law are honest. What they are really mad about is that in Arizona, immigration laws will be enforced, and that in California they are not– and in the rest of the country for that matter.

Here is the complete section of the pertinent California law–wonder if Eric Holder has read this?

(a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully
cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws.
(2) Notify the person of his or her apparent status as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws and inform him or her that, apart from any criminal justice proceedings, he or she must either obtain legal status or leave the United States.
(3) Notify the Attorney General of California and the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service of the apparent illegal status and provide any additional information that may be requested by any other public entity.
(c) Any legislative, administrative, or other action by a city, county, or other legally authorized local governmental entity with jurisdictional boundaries, or by a law enforcement agency, to prevent or limit the cooperation required by subdivision (a) is expressly prohibited.
And, there is even a California Attorney General opinion upholding the penal code:

California AG Opinion 01-213 (11/16/2001): While California’s Penal Code Section 843b’s mandate that local officers inquire into immigration status has been enjoined, officers can still voluntarily make the inquiry. A local law enforcement officer during detention of Spanish speaking person for otherwise valid purposes may question the person as to immigration status, but may not question status solely because the individual speaks a non-English language. Local officers may continue investigation into a person’s immigration status prior to arraignment on state charges. In footnote 4, the Opinion indicates “Civil violations of immigration law are not cognizable” under a formula in Pen. Code s. 836, sub. (a), (a)(1), which allows California peace officers to arrest either in obedience to a warrant or without a warrant where the officer has probable cause to believe that a public offense has been committed in the officer’s presence.” In supporting the Arizona boycott, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa called the Arizona Law “unpatriotic and unconstitutional.”

I guess he won’t be going to Disneyland any time soon.

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops prefer Slavery!
Hat tip to Tuleesh who provided this little gem from the Cathechism of the Catholic Church:
Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens" (CCC 2241)
So I ask all of the Bishops and Priests that support the opposition to Arizona's new law to explain to us faithful just why you would deny this state and the lawful abiding citizens within it the right to protect itself from a lawless and sinful group of people who are clearly not respecting or showing gratitude to this country which has received them? ...........Silence
Also you are being very obtuse in your position. It makes one wonder if the real reason is that you prefer to keep this group of people in their current status so they can continue to work in deplorable conditions and as slaves to their dishonest masters who pay them under the table?........Silence
Could it be because like the progressive politicians you observe keenly that if you invest now, when these illegals take over through propogation you will be in the catbird seat to fill your pews and coffers? ..........Silence
Dare I suppose, in an even more devious and evil way you have chosen to be cowards and turn on God and his directives through the Magisterium in order to keep your cushy and serene lifestyle here on earth? ........Silence
Apply your dumbass logic to any other law, and it would be quickly rebuffed. For example, if we applied the same thought process to someone who is homeless breaking into YOUR rectory because they were in need of a place to stay, would your position would be to allow this person to stay regardless of the illegal occupancy and laws they broke. I doubt it. What if a person who could not afford a car but needed one to get to work, so they stole yours. What illegal immigrants are doing is NO DIFFERENT, and they should be sent back to whence they came.
Once more and I have said this before, if their government is so corrupt that it oppresses its people which need to come to the USA to get their "fair shot at life" Why shouldn't they be instructed to stay in that country and fight for a just government? Isn't that the morally just action for their case?
You guys are doing nothing but destroying what it is that illegals come here seeking, and when they do propogate to the point where they are the majority you will not be treated kindly. Because if they were not willing to work to change their own country what idiotic logic tells you they will do anything to change this government once they and the rest of the progressives corrupt this one.
Yeah, I know...........SILENCE!
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Washington (CNSNews.com) – Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told CNSNews.com Thursday that illegal immigration has not contributed to his city's budget problems, but, on the contrary, that illegal immigration adds to the “economic might” of California.

"In California, I think there’s a real sense that these immigrants provide a great deal to the economic might of the state," said Villaraigosa.

After Villaraigosa testified at a congressional hearing on Thursday, CNSNews.com asked him what impact illegal immigration has had on the fiscal sitution of his city, which is now running a $485 million deficit.

“With the city having passed this boycott of Arizona, do you think illegal immigration is a contributor to the budget problems in L.A.?” CNSNews.com asked.

“No,” Villaraigosa responded

At Catholic cathedral, Lutheran leader calls the Pill ‘God’s gift’
May 14, 2010

Speaking at an ecumenical event in Munich’s Catholic cathedral, Bishop Margot Käßmann, who led Germany’s Lutherans until her February arrest for drunk driving, paid tribute to the birth control pill.

The Pill, she said, can be seen as “God’s gift, for it is about the preservation of life, of freedom, which doesn’t have to immediately degenerate into pornography, as much as the sexualisation of our society is, of course, a problem.”

“It’s about love without fear and about responsible parenthood. And for women, in fact, it’s about concern for their own lives and those of their own children.”

Plot To Kill Pope Benedict Foiled
From CNA
Assassination plot by radical Muslims against Pope prevented

Rome, Italy, May 14, 2010 / 12:03 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Two Moroccan students who attended a university in the central Italian city of Perugia were expelled from the country last month after it was discovered that they were conspiring to kill Pope Benedict. One of them allegedly said he wished to “earn a place in Paradise.”

According to Italian weekly newspaper Panorama, conversations intercepted by Italian authorities led to the arrest and deportation of the two suspects.

The order for expulsion reportedly included the transcript of a conversation in which one of the students, Mohammed Hlal, said that he wished “death to the head of the Vatican City State” and was "ready to assassinate him to earn a place in Paradise."

The 27-year-old Hlal was speaking over the phone with 22-year-old Ahmed Errahmouni when he made the statements which earned them the attention of the local police and a trip back to Morocco.

They were deemed a “threat to national security” in the document signed by the Italian Minister of the Interior and expelled on April 29, Panorama reports.

According to investigation begun last October by the Italian anti-mafia police, the two were known to have a radical vision of Islam and had expressed a desire to obtain explosive materials. It was reported that no material used to construct explosives was found in their residence hall rooms.

Hlal studied international communications, while Errahmouni was a student of math and physics at the University of Perugia.

Pope Nancy Wags Finger At American Bishops
Only a handful stand up to her

Here's some of a pathetically sad article from The California Catholic Daily;

Pelosi lectures bishops
House Speaker says Church should preach immigration reform from its pulpits

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the San Francisco Democrat and self-described Catholic who has repeatedly run afoul of American bishops for her pro-abortion, pro-stem cell research voting record, has counseled U.S. prelates they should preach immigration reform from the pulpit.

"The cardinals, the archbishops, the bishops that come to me... say, 'We want you to pass immigration reform,' and I said, 'I want you to speak about it from the pulpit,'" Pelosi told participants at a May 6 conference at the U.S. Capitol sponsored by the National Catholic Reporter and Trinity Washington University, her alma mater. "Some (who) oppose immigration reform are sitting in those pews, and you have to tell them that this is a manifestation of our living the Gospels."

“Within the last 24 hours, the archbishops of Denver, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C., along with Bishop William Lori have all publicly upbraided the Speaker of the House for her erroneous comments on the Church’s abortion teaching,” reported Catholic News Agency at the time.

Five.

A whopping five of our alleged 'leaders' have had the backbone to stand up to Pope Nancy. Keep in mind, there are over 300 members of the USCCB.

Could we be seeing the real 3d Message of Fatima being played out? Just a thought.

Central Planning vs. Individual Liberty

Many of us go through life never really thinking about the above two subjects. However at the current rate that the United States government is closing ranks and centralizing one major activity after another, i.e. Healthcare, Finance, et al. We are going to experience the destructive forces of bureaucratic reprobates on a massive scale.

In my field of profession, which is procurement, I have been awash in the battle between central planning and individual liberty all my career. There are two ways that this comes into play. There is either sales (who represent individual liberty) versus procurement (who represents central planning) or local procurement (who represents individual liberty) versus central/corporate procurement (who represents central planning). In both cases each side has a case to be made for why the processes which they undertake in order to better the bottom line profit merit more consideration and should take precedence over the other.

Beginning with sales versus procurement lets examine the facts. First, it is the responsibility of sales to bring business to a company so that revenue comes in and profits can be made. If a company can minimize their expenditures in gaining the revenue, profits will increase. Here is where the stealthy central planning procurement professional can exploit a not so vigilant manager into believing that he can increase profits through "standardization", "risk management", and "bundling procurements". This latter term means taking multiple procurements that are similar in nature across an organization and putting them together to gain a cheaper price. These are all very noble goals and when properly applied indeed improve the bottom line. However, there is ALWAYS enmity between sales and procurement. This is primarily a personality issue. Most sales people are "drivers" they typically act on emotion and are not detail oriented. They can't afford to be, their job is to make a person "feel" confident about doing business with your company. This frustrates the beejeezus out of procurement who is typically an "analytical" personality. This guy gets a sales order from sales and can't figure out what was sold. Proper numbers aren't used, some things are promised that should not be, etc... All the procurement guy knows is now he has to make chicken salad out of chicken &%)*. So from this point procurement always thinks in terms that if they ever get the chance to run things they would put a stop to all this inattention to detail by controlling, who, what, when, where, and why goods are sold and purchased.

This is certainly not a good idea, sales needs the ability to be flexible to bring in revenue. Many times the difference between getting a sale and not getting one is being able to do something the other guys can't. If you have no sales, you can't very well "control" the procurement of nothing. It took me a very long time to come to grips with this fact as a professional. That sales guy gives me the butter and the bread I have to figure out how to spread it. That is a fact of business life. You just have to put up with some amount of inefficiency. Yes I said that all you Six Sigma Black Belts, to hell with you and your DMAIC!

Next lets examine in more detail the actual "standardization", "risk management", and "bundling" aspects of a central procurement planner. This is still one of my biggest pet peeves professionally. As the story goes, when you have decentralized procurement (procurement at every branch, departmental, organizational level, as the case may be, there are duplicated processes, or multiples of the same product being procured separately and from different suppliers, etc. The big push has been going on for 20 years now to centralize, standardize, and bundle as much procurement as possible in order to get costs lower. Sounds like a great idea doesn't it! I agree these are also noble goals but what happens if you let it carry away your organization? Well I will tell you, first if you are in manufacturing the first casualty is usually your product line. Soon when you used to make five different types of pressure washers, you now can only provide three. So all of the clients that sales guy had that needed the other two types are no longer served. In most cases if that client still wanted to do business with you he either bought a pressure washer that was a little too small for his needs or way too big for his needs. All because some pointy headed number cruncher decided that he could save some money by standardizing on three models only. This same practice can be applied to IT equipment that is internal to a company. "Thou Shalt Buy This Model Only" who cares what the need is, which can vary by the geographical market served or industry served etc. It becomes the equivalent of a Star Trek uniform. You only have a choice of red, gold, or blue of this ugly polyester jumpsuit. Again decentralized procurement has many inefficiencies but at the same time you can more easily adapt to changes and challenges in the marketplace.

"So SimplexVir, that was a lot of useless information that I would have preferred not to have read, why have you vexed me so?" GOOD QUESTION!

You see what is happening in America right now is you have a bunch of bureaucrats that are chomping at the bit to "finally" put into place all of these theories and centralization plans so that they can CONTROL what the population does. They have no tolerance for individual liberty, you just do not know what is best for you and you need to fit into the proper processes that they have designed. If you don't fit tough, they will make you fit. You must comply in order for their plans to work. They do not care about your inefficient, independent, individual liberty. This is a cancer on this country. Just like allowing a procurement professionals to take over a company would absolutely KILL the company, allowing a central planning style of government to become so large and have so much control will KILL this Nation. We already have one foot in the grave!

I've Decided....
So THAAAAAT'S who he is!

After much consideration, and even better suggestions, I think I'll just remain an International Man of Mystery.

Pope Echoes Message Of Akita
Coincidence? I think not

Here's some of the article from CatholicCulture.com; (Emphasis mine) Greatest threat to Church comes from within, Pope says
May 11, 2010

The greatest danger to the Church comes not from external enemies or critics, but "is born from the sin within the Church," Pope Benedict XVI said on May 11.

In a conversation with reporters who accompanied him on his flight from Rome to Portugal, Pope Benedict acknowledged that "attacks against the Pope or the Church don't come just from outside the Church."

"The suffering of the church also comes from within the Church," the Pope said. He continued:

This too has always been known, but today we see it in a really terrifying way. The greatest persecution of the church doesn’t come from enemies on the outside, but is born in sin within the church. The church thus has a deep need to re-learn penance, to accept purification, to learn on one hand forgiveness but also the necessity of justice. Forgiveness does not exclude justice.
It was also then Cardinal Ratzinger, who in 1988 as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, gives definitive judgment on the Akita events and messages as reliable and worthy of belief.

Outrage: Obama Administration Targets Military for Pay Reductions

President Barack Obama — who came to power with the help of government employee unions across the nation and has lavished on them hundreds of billions in stimulus funds to keep them on federal, state and local payrolls with no strings attached — is moving to cut spending on salaries for military personnel.

This weekend The Washington Post headlined story, "Pentagon Asking Congress to Hold Back on Generous Increases in Troop Pay,” disclosed that the Obama administration is “pleading” with Congress to give military personnel a much smaller increase in pay than lawmakers have proposed.

The Pentagon contends that Congress simply has been too generous with troops during the past decade.

In fact, lawmakers have lavished so much money on troops, according to the Post, that service members are now better compensated than workers in the private sector with similar experience and education levels.

For example, the military brass claims that an average sergeant in the Army with four years of service and one dependent would receive $52,589 in annual compensation, according to the paper. This figure includes basic pay, housing, and subsistence allowances, as well as tax benefits.

Meanwhile, a U.S. postal letter carrier, with no supervisory or hazardous duty, makes approximately $80,000 a year when all benefits are factored in.

Steadfast in faith, loyalty to Holy Father
CBS / N.Y. Times poll shows increase in Catholics’ approval of Pope Benedict

New York City, N.Y., May 6, 2010 / (CNA/EWTN News) -- Most churchgoing Catholics say their feelings about the Church are unaffected by the Vatican’s handling of recent child sex abuse reports, according to a recently published CBS News / New York Times poll. Among all Catholics, more have a favorable opinion of Pope Benedict XVI now than they did in March, and they tend to believe media reports are blown out of proportion and harder on the Church than on others.

The CBS News / New York Times poll was conducted between April 28 and May 2, and released on May 4. It surveyed a random sample of 1079 Catholics nationwide by telephone.

Polltakers divided respondents into three categories: weekly Mass attendees, all Catholics, and all Americans. Answers from all respondents are thus weighted by differences in Catholic responses.

Weekly Mass goers are about evenly split in their opinion of the Vatican’s handling of child sex abuse by priests, with 45 percent saying it is doing a good job. About 58 percent of all Catholics and 66 percent of all American respondents said it is not.

About 77 percent of weekly churchgoers said the Vatican’s handing of recent child sex abuse report has had no effect on their feelings about the Catholic Church, while 69 percent of all Catholics and 52 percent of total respondents said the same. About 20 percent of all Catholics and 36 percent of all respondents said it has made them feel more negative.

Considering their views of Pope Benedict, 43 percent of Catholics say they have a favorable opinion of the Pontiff, compared to 27 percent in March 2010. Unfavorable views increased from 11 percent to 17 percent. Among all respondents, 16 percent reported favorable views, 24 percent reported unfavorable views and 59 percent said they were unsure.

Asked whether the Vatican is mainly trying to prevent child sex abuse or cover up the problem, 75 percent of Catholics and 50 percent of all respondents said the Vatican presently aimed at prevention, while 33 percent of Americans thought cover-ups continued.
Let's Throw More Laws (AND MONEY!) At The Problem!
I'm really getting sick of this

Oh, am I going to really upset a whole bunch of people with this posting. But you know what? I don't care. I'm fed up.

With that said, there's absolutely no more of a need for "comprehensive immigration reform" then there is for grand pronouncements from the Chanceries concerning "Safe Environments" for children being around our own priests.

At the end of this posting, I have the sure fire, no doubt about it, just can't lose solution for the ills that befall our nation and Church.

In the meantime, here's some of the article in regards to the latest from the Bishop of SLC; (Emphasis mine)

Bishop Wester: Immigration enforcement initiatives have failed
May 07, 2010
The failure of law enforcement efforts to stem the tide of illegal immigration manifests the need for comprehensive immigration reform, according to Bishop John Wester of Salt Lake City, chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration.

“The federal government since 2002 has spent over $100 billion on immigration enforcement initiatives,” Bishop Wester writes in a Washington Post column.
OK, fellow bloglodytes... Here's the solution - Just follow the damn rules.

1. If someone (anyone!) illegally enters this nation, prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law to include incarceration.

2. If an employer (any employer!) knowingly hires someone who isn't qualified to work in this nation, prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law to include incarceration and closing of their business.

3. If someone (anyone!) molests a child, prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law to include incarceration.

4. If anyone (and I mean anyone!) rapes a child, prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law to include execution.

Yes, it really is that simple.

Mother Theresa - Hate Monger?

Dear Friend of CatholicVote,

I have wonderful news. The Mother Teresa stamp is coming! Over 138,000 friends of CatholicVote.org joined together to defend the stamp to honor Mother Teresa. And the Postal Service took notice.

Roy Betts, a spokesman for the Postal Service, told CatholicVote.org yesterday:

“The stamp will be dedicated September 5 [at] the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. Feel free to post information about the stamp, the image and the dedication ceremony on your website. Thanks!”
Wow. Launching the stamp at a church. The anti-religion radicals are going to go wild!

When the stamp was first announced, a group called the Freedom from Religion Foundation began spreading lies about Blessed Mother Teresa, accusing this holy nun of having a ‘darker side,’ and calling her a ‘polarizing Roman Catholic figurehead.’

Mother Teresa gave a pro-life speech when she accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. This radical group called her speech a “disturbing, befrogged religious rant.” That’s why we swung into action to “Stamp Out Bigotry!”

Thank you for signing our petition. It truly made a difference. If your friends or family would like to add their names in support of the Mother Teresa stamp and against those who attack this holy nun, tell them to visit http://www.StampOutBigotry.com/ .

Too often only one side of this debate is heard. This time the Post Office heard from us. A separate spokesperson for USPS even told a reporter that our efforts were appreciated.

You would think attacking Mother Teresa would be off limits. But in our world, respect and decency can be discarded so long as you're bashing Christianity. A small but vocal segment of our country will stop at nothing to cut down the role of religion in our public life.

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us.

Sincerely,
Brian Burch

Happy Hard Hat Riot Day!
Construction Workers, Stock Exchange Suits, New York's Finest.... just two words; HELL YES!!

Hat Tip to Relapsed Catholic

"A lot of us are World War II vets and fathers and purple hearts. We're from a generation that believes the flag over everything." - Electrician Morty Grutman, quoted in the New York Post, May 9, 1970.

40 years ago today, communist led anti-war hippie scum (better known as The Great Unwashed) staged themselves at the George Washington statue on Wall Street and were waving Communist Viet Cong flags and burning, urinating and defecating on American flags, just like what had recently happened in Washington DC.

New York city construction workers (better known as The Hard Hats) had had enough. They proceeded to charge the hippie base camp and set up American flags, then pursued and thumped the living shit out of said Great Unwashed. What happened next, no one expected... the construction workers were unexpectedly joined by white collar office workers (better known as The Suits) from the New York Stock Exchange. The NYSE literally emptied as Suits fought shoulder to shoulder along side the Hard Hats.

Mayor John Lindsay ordered that all flags on City buildings be lowered to half mast due to the Kent State shootings, which the construction workers of New York overwhelmingly opposed. They threatened to overwhelm City Hall unless the flag was raised to full mast, which it was... by the construction workers themselves.

In an other unexpected turn of events, 150 NYPD officers assigned to City Hall didn't interfere while the Hard Hats and Suits taught the Great Unwashed a thing or two about manners, decorum, and patriotism. As the American flag was raised to full staff over City Hall, the construction workers asked Police Officers remove their riot helmets in respect. They did.

The Hard Hat Riots were followed by a series of pro-war rallies in New York almost every day during May. These rallies culminated in a large Wednesday, May 20, 1970, rally. Over 100,000 hard hats, stock brokers and other workers peacefully marched through the streets of downtown New York City. The rally was organized by the local New York City construction workers union to show support for President Nixon and the Vietnam War.

Funny, schools never teach about this.

Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees
Freedom of expression or cultural disrespect on Cinco de Mayo?
By GEORGE KIRIYAMA

On any other day at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Daniel Galli and his four friends would not even be noticed for wearing T-shirts with the American flag. But Cinco de Mayo is not any typical day especially on a campus with a large Mexican American student population.

Galli says he and his friends were sitting at a table during brunch break when the vice principal asked two of the boys to remove American flag bandannas that they wearing on their heads and for the others to turn their American flag T-shirts inside out. When they refused, the boys were ordered to go to the principal's office.

"They said we could wear it on any other day," Daniel Galli said, "but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today."

The boys said the administrators called their T-shirts "incendiary" that would lead to fights on campus.

But to many Mexican-American students at Live Oak, this was a big deal. They say they were offended by the five boys and others for wearing American colors on a Mexican holiday.

"I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."

As for an apology, the boys and their families say, 'fat chance.'

"I'm not going to apologize. I did nothing wrong," Galli said. "I went along with my normal day. I might have worn an American flag, but I'm an American and I'm proud to be an American."

The boys will not be suspended and were allowed to return to school Thursday. We spotted one of them when he got to campus -- and, yes, he was sporting an American flag T-shirt.

Notre Dame President Fr John I. Jenkins has said that protests during President Obama's visit were led by individuals who "threatened law and order" and that the same rules apply for all protests.

"In the weeks leading up to Notre Dame's Commencement on May 17, 2009, a number of people violated University policies on campus demonstrations," Fr Jenkins said in a statement.

"They were given repeated warnings by law enforcement officials, and then, when they persisted, they were arrested and charged with Criminal Trespass.

Deo Gratias

This is so heartening. All the crap going on in The Church, and there are still those drawn to the Truth that is the Holy Catholic Church.

Here's the meat and potatoes of the article from the Catholic News Agency;
Anglican bishops visit Vatican to discuss conversion

London, England (CNA/EWTN News).- The Sunday Telegraph in Britain reported yesterday that several Anglican bishops met with Vatican officials to discuss the process of converting to the Catholic Church.

Despite the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams reportedly urging them not to leave the Church of England, several bishops are looking to leave the Anglican Communion over their opposition to the introduction of women bishops and priests.

According to the Sunday Telegraph, Bishops John Broadhurst, Keith Newton and Andrew Burnham, from the Dioceses of Fulham, Richborough and Ebbsfleet respectively, all met with senior Vatican officials last week.

Meeting with leaders from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Anglican bishops discussed the possibility of becoming Catholic, in accordance with Pope Benedict's recent invitation. The Holy Father's “Anglicanorum coetibus,” a motu propio which was released in Nov. 2009, offered Vatican guidelines for Anglican groups to enter into communion with the Catholic Church.

The Associated Press released an article on Monday quoting Bishop Broadhurst, who confirmed that the trip had taken place yet declined to comment on what was discussed.

“I don't want to be drawn on it,” he told the AP, saying that the issue “can damage both the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church.”

Bishop Newton added that the visit consisted of "nothing more than exploratory talks."

Church of England officials refused to speak publicly about the issue.

Catholic Seton Hall U. to Offer Gay 'Marriage' Course by Homosexualist Prof

SOUTH ORANGE, New Jersey, April 28, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Seton Hall University, the oldest Catholic diocesan university in the U.S., will be offering a same-sex "marriage" course taught by a homosexualist professor.

The Setonian, the university's newspaper, reported that the new course offering for Fall 2010 would be offered by associate professor W. King Mott, an open homosexual who was demoted in 2005 after complaining about the Catholic Church's stance against homosexuality.

“The Roman Catholic Church is prima facie homophobic,” Mott had told the press. “The Roman Catholic Church considers me to be inherently disordered. I don't know how much more homophobic one can be.” However, the university insisted that it was not rebuking Mott for his personal views, but only for failing to disassociate himself from the school.

Mott, who as of 2005 lived with his male partner, openly maintains an affiliation with Lambda Legal, the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies, and Human Rights Campaign, all leading homosexualist groups.

Hey, DingleBarry... how's that oil spill recovery goin'?

Here's some of the article from the AP; (Emphasis and comments mine)

Data show New Orleans recovery stalled under Nagin

NEW ORLEANS - As Mayor Ray Nagin leaves office, hundreds of damaged city buildings including police stations and fire houses sit unrepaired more than four years after Hurricane Katrina, stark reminders of how the recovery has floundered. (No, the recovery hasn't foundered, Nagin has.)

Only seven percent of 283 city-owned structures slated to be rebuilt have been completed or are under construction, according to an analysis by The Associated Press. Those figures back up an impression many residents have had for more than a year — the Nagin administration has failed to renew much of New Orleans.

Nagin said the city made a remarkable comeback under his watch. (When all else fails, claim victory.)

As for public infrastructure, the Nagin administration is adamant that it has done a good job and that FEMA — not city officials — are largely to blame.
(See, I told you it's Bush's fault. Oh, wait... DingleBarry is working on year 2. And allow me to ask yet again -- how's that oil spill recovery goin'?)

But Shouldn't They Be Executed For Committing Sodomy?
One would think

These silly moslems need to make up their minds. Sodomites need to be executed? Sodomy for so-called 'allah' is good? C'mon guys... you need to make up your minds!

Here's some of a rather disturbing article from CompassDirect.org; (Emphasis mine)
Pakistani Muslims Severely Beat, Sodomize Christian Barber
Brother of Muslim who insisted on having beard cut, seven others, break hair-cutter’s bones.

SARGODHA, Pakistan, April 28 (CDN) — A Christian barber in this Punjab Province city is still recovering from broken bones and other injuries sustained earlier this month after eight Muslims allegedly beat and sodomized him for cutting the beard of a Muslim.

Marwat Masih, 29, initially refused the request of 19-year-old Qandeel Cheema to cut his beard in Sargodha’s Gulshan-e-Bashir town on April 13, knowing that area Sunni Muslims believe the Quran prohibits it. But Cheema, a high school student, told Masih that he had lived and studied in Lahore and therefore wanted a more modern look, the bed-ridden and feeble Masih told Compass.

Eyewitnesses told Compass that as Masih was cutting Cheema’s beard, the client’s older brother – local radical Muslim land owner Shakeel Cheema – was returning by tractor from his fields and, noting the family Jeep in front of the Marwat Hair Stylist shop, stopped in.

“When Shakeel Cheema saw me shaving his younger brother’s beard, he became angry and started vandalizing mirrors, the sound system and chairs, and he desecrated a wooden cross perched on the top of the front mirrors,” Masih said. “He also started beating my head with his shoes.”

Eyewitnesses told Compass that Shakeel Cheema shouted orders to his companions to tie Masih up and throw him into the wagon attached to his tractor, and that he ordered his younger brother to leave for Lahore at once.

Masih said that he was blindfolded with a black cloth and taken to an unknown place where he was locked in a room. An hour later, Shakeel Cheema and seven others arrived and began striking him with clubs, breaking his ribs, a wrist and leg bones.

“Shakeel Cheema said, ‘Now we are going to teach you a real lesson for shaving the beard of a Muslim man,” Masih said, and after a long, pained pause he related how Cheema and the seven others sodomized him. “I started bleeding and fell unconscious.”

His father, Laal Masih, older brother Hassrat Masih and other relatives had begun searching for him, and after midnight that night they found him lying half-naked and unconscious off the main street of Gulshan-e-Bashir town, his father told Compass. They immediately took him to Rural Health Centre, where doctors kept him under observation for two days and treated him for internal bleeding and the broken ribs, leg bones and wrist.
“We submitted an application to the Saddr police twice, but they took no action against Shakeel Cheema and his accomplices,” Laal Masih said. The family is appealing to Christian ministers and parliamentarians for assistance.

Police have refused to file a First Information Report against Cheema and his accomplices, who all remained at large at press time.

A shopkeeper next to Masih’s barbershop told Compass that the barber deserved the abuse.
He deserves such punishment, as he did something that is forbidden according to the teaching of the Quran and the sunna [arabic word for the sayings or habits of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam],” said Muhammad Maqsood, who has a long, white beard. “Marwat Masih paid for his crime.”
