“What’s gone strange with America”
Christians’ cowardice prevents cultural renewal, Archbishop Chaput tells Catholic scholars

Baltimore, Md., Sep 26, 2010 (CNA/EWTN News) -- Christians’ lack of faith and cowardice are the primary obstacles to Christian culture at a time when unbelief is the spirit-destroying “state religion” of the modern world, Archbishop Charles Chaput has told a gathering of academics. He urged personal repentance and witness as the path to cultural renewal.

Comparing American Catholics to the ancient Israelites who “forgot their faith because they weren’t taught,” he said that if Catholics no longer know their faith or their obligations, “we leaders, parents and teachers have no one to blame but ourselves.”

Gone strange indeed! No wonder! Catholics contracept, abort their children, and divorce their wives and husbands, commit adultery and fornication, abuse children, . . . (insert herein your favorite immoral vice) . . . at about the same rate as the rest of the U.S. population in general does. Only a minority of us (perhaps a large minority, but minority nonetheless) go to mass regularly. In most respects, I am not all that sure we can be distinguished morally by the majority in American culture.

I also perceive that every nation state has two religions: a national one and a state one. Our Constitution supposedly insists there there will be no state religion, i.e., one to which American must support with taxes. But we have a national religion. We and other nation-states always will. Our current national religion is called secularism, or secular humanism, atheism, agnosticism or perhaps even some mix of the above. What ever one calls our national religion, it is definitely godless or anti-God in character.

Our national religion used to be Judeo-Christianity and largely protestant in spirit. I have no particular beef with a protestantized nominal (Judeo) Christianity as the nominal national religion of this nation. At least it has morals behind it. And it acknowledges Divine Providence overtly and supports religion in public life.

The essentially god-less or atheistic culture in which we live is ultimately militantly opposed to (Judeo)Christianity of whatever persuasion. In past decades atheism was allowed to exist in our culture (The First Amendment in action), although marginalized, but not due to the coercive power of government or laws.

IMHO, Christianity will be largely marginalized in our culture, and then eventually the attempt will be made by cultural atheism to persecute it out of existence because atheism and (Judeo)Christianity are fundamentally and ultimately incompatible. One must ineluctably give way to the other.

If the atheists succeed, then I perceive our American nation-state and culture will go the way of the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah. We will then be singing "By the waters of Babylon . . . " [Psalm 137] . . . or worse, proclaiming "There is no God, but Allah, and Mohammed is His Prophet."

I would assert that the stakes in this cultural war are huge.
