The koran and the First Amendment

This Saturday is the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States.

To commemorate this, Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach in Florida wants to publicly burn copies of the koran. Jones has states that in his opinion, "Islam is of the devil".

Notables ranging from the NATO Secretary General, to the FBI, to the top American General in Afghanistan have spoken out about this.

The koran also calls upon moslems to kill non-moslems, as well as insults both Jesus Christ and His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Does the First Amendement to the Constitution allow this Protestant minister to burn the Koran? Yes.

Should he? No.

While most people would think I would support burning the Koran, I do not. It's best to leave a book of the devil alone. We shouldn't stoop to the level of these evil Islamist fanatics. True, not every Muslim is a fanatic or even evil, but ...the religion is a false one, the Mullahs and Imams are insane, and the best way to combat all of this is by being an example. The more we make the Islamists martyrs, the stronger they become.

That being said, we should build hundreds of new nuclear power plants in the US, use the electricity to make our own oil from coal and water, and go tell the Muslims to drown in their mineral slime. All their monetary revenue would dry up, and so to would their ability to buy guns and bombs.

But burning the Koran? That's just plain silly and childish.

Should I burn one of my two copies? I have two translations. What about my copy of Mein Kampf or Das Kapitol? Does it count if my copy of Mein Kampf or Das Kapitol is in the original German? Neither is, BTW - I only do dead languages like Latin and Fortran-77. ;-)

Now I don't believe in any of the trash in those books, but it's always good to be informed about where your enemy stands. Doing that may enable you to make him your friend some day.

Furthermore, I work with Muslims as well as Buddhists, Christians, Jews, atheists and agnostics in a very large international corporation. People from China, India, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and elsewhere are all in the very building to which I will shortly go to work today. I would never insult my Islamic co-workers by burning their holy book no matter how much I abhor the anti-Jewish and anti-Christian things it says. Nothing will turn them away from Christ faster than dis-respectfulness. Again, I don't respect the evil that Mohammed propagates in the Koran. But I do respect my co-workers.

Geez....I am getting waaayyyy too sentimental and tolerant and open minded in my old age! Where's that cantakerous Ioannes with the sword of righteousness ready to slay the infidel!

One last thing: the only ones I truly disrespect are liberal Democrat Catholics. Why? Because of all people, they KNOW better. My Islamic, or Buddhist, or Jewish, or Protestant co-workers may live in ignorance and have their beliefs out of ignorance. But there is NO excuse for a liberal Democrat Catholic. None. Zero. They KNOW the teaching of the Church and they deliberately defy it. And there's the differance.

I think I may burn my own Koran. Let the appeasers say what they want, I respect their right to an opinion, may they respect mine in return? Doubtful!

Just deleted my original post due to an ommission and inconsistency in it.

BVP posts:

OK this is a nitpicking technical point. The Koran is only the Koran in the original (classical) Arabic. Translations are not holy writ according to those Islamic folks.

Ioannes, I agree with what you say. We should be spending our time converting Muslims, rather than insulting them.

As far as Marilyn Manson is concerned, we should boycott this @$$ hole, and criticize him vociferously in public for his sacrilege and blasphemy. Same with those sacrilegious pseudo-artists.

I recognize that these miscreants have First Amendment rights of free speech. Nonetheless, freedom and a free people require self-control to remain free. These folks, including that pastor, lack the virtue of prudence. I also think that pastor is a show-off; just looking for publicity.

I don't agree with those Muslims when they go ballistic (violent) every time there is a perceived insult to their prophet, their book, or their god. [I am not at all sure they even worship the same God that we do.] Nonetheless, perhaps we Catholics/Christians ought to go (non-violently) ballistic every time CBS or some other liberal, waggish, organization insults, demeans, or misrepresents our Faith.

Here's an idea to defend Mother Church: Please consider joining The Catholic League.

Another note ~ We just bought a bunch of Mother Teresa stamps at the Post Office. Our Christmas cards are arriving at a steady pace from various charities so it appears that we'll have plenty left over to send to the ACLU. We do it every year but this year they'll get to see our very own Mother Teresa on her very own stamp!!! (Let 'em think it's a donation, it goes to the same floor)

Indeed but there is also the fact that some people are not trained to handle these materials and should either hand them over to the proper authority or simply burn them - this is the recommendation of St. Pius X.

Book burning is not archaic, childish or silly for the right reason and for the right person.

This pastor on the hand.. I'm not too sure about it.
