So Why Is Today Called "Good" Friday
Today is anything but "good", right?

I've often wondered by today is called Good Friday. Today's anything but good. It's the day Christ died. What's so "good" about that? Plenty.

Remember, it took the death of Jesus to open the Gates of Heaven. Salvation simply wouldn't have been possible without His death.

But back to the meaning of Good Friday -- I've read a couple of different sites that suggest that "Good" is just a change over time from the phrase "God's Friday". That certainly may be possible. After all, 'good bye' is just a mutation over time of 'God be with ye'.

But I digress... could good have been an Old English word that initially meant holy? I've also read that the Latin sanctus (holy) is related to Old English gesund, which has evolved to our modern-day word good. Possibly Good Friday initially and literally translated to Holy Friday.

Bottom line -- Thank You, Lord for all You have done for us all... even unto Your death. God has been more than good to us on this Good Friday.

Thank you, Caveman! In case you have never read it, Jim Bishop's book The Day Christ Died is in my (not-humble) opinion the best thing ever written on the subject.

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee, because by Thy Cross Thou has redeemed the world.

VSC~ Have studied (and forgotten) a few languages over the years but remember that Old English is from the Older German as per your example: "gesund" means "health" as when someone sneezes another person might say "Gesundheit" "Heit" = highest (or best of) health.

Happy Easter to you, your family and everyone here.

Our Jesus, ALL GOOD and deserving of ALL OUR LOVE. What a beautiful painting you posted. Awesome God/Man "sigh"
