I'm sick of hearing this crap about how our economy is fundamentally strong. How many made in China anvils does he need to fall on his head to get it?
American factories have great big locks and chains keeping the entrance gate closed forever. Well... until good ol' Mother Nature does her thing, and the building itself falls apart. Face it folks, America has gone from a nation of steel workers to a nation of Wal-Mart greeters. And we did that to ourselves.
Should I even bring up the nationalization (ie: taxpayer bail-out) of huge chunks of the financial sector? Don't even get me started on pressing "1" for English.
Also, Senator McCain, you need to knock off this bullshit about how "the fundamentals" of the American economy is the actual American Worker. Yeah, yeah... we all know that the American Worker will bust their collective humps when given a job to do. Americans are essentially hard working, honest, and decent people. We've been that way for generations.
But even the best trained and motivated Marine can't take the proverbial hill if he's unarmed, blind in one eye, and has his hands tied behind his back. And that's what's happened to the American Worker.
Here's what you need, Senator... a rather large Mea Culpa on your part. Admit you were part of the problem (NAFTA, GATT, blanket amnesty, etc.) and then give us some concrete solutions that will, for example, turn Detroit from a freakin' ghost town to the economic and manufacturing powerhouse that not all that long ago, was the envy of the world.
After all, you're supposedly all about "Straight Talk", right?

There really isn't much a government can do about the jobs available to the American worker.
You can have a gazillion automobile factories and steel mills but money has to be made by whoever runs the factories and profits must be made.
As long as a factory worker in China gets paid less than a factory worker in the US, the US worker will get the short end of the stick. China is even taking jobs away from poor countries like Philippines because the workers there cannot compete either.
You want the government to fix things....but, honestly, that can't be done.

Whith the advent of NAFTA and GATT the laws of competition fair trade went out the window, along with the spirit of "fair trade".
The fact of the matter is, our industrial base was sent overseas, and we did that to ourselves.
Robert, you display a severe lack of information.
Labor constitutes about 5-6% of the cost-to-manufacture most products; so the "labor-cost" issue is not really significant in itself.
However, when you look a little deeper, you'll find that PRChina commits $umpty-Billion to factories which export FROM China.
That's called "subsidization."
Were the US to impose import-taxes equivalent to the PRChina subsidies, you'd find that US goods are extremely cost-competitive.
Further, any industrialist will tell you that PRC-made goods are not consistently "quality" goods. Of any container of stuff, almost 33% gets tossed, or returned for re-work.
FAIR trade, Robert, not "Free" trade.

Everything the government touches turns to crap.
IMHO what we really need to do is to stop bailing out these moronic companies for failing as an institution and them start over themselves.
But sense the government is using our money for this i do command that a few things be done ;)
1. Give a check of a nice amount, say a million to Mr and Mrs. Caveman
2. Since you the wonderful government haven't really accomplished anything, all of you are fired.
3. Since I don't want to help people that fail, take the money that you're already stealing from my check, and put it right back into my account. (And that goes for the rest of us too)
In the meantime while my requests are being headed to you can listen to elevator music.
