How Do You Respond To Such Blatant Stupidity?
The king of anti-Catholic whoppers
In a discussion I had awhile back with an ardent non- (and anti) Catholic, this individual was getting frustrated due to my irritating bad habit of pointing to Sacred Scriptures to refute her litany of... well, when you get right down to it... outright lies leveled against The Church.
You know, the usual nonsense they throw at us; we worship Mary and the Saints; there's no Scriptural basis for Sacramental Confession; the Eucharist is merely symbolic, etc, etc, ad nauseum.
But like I said, her arguments were simplistic and easily dissectable. In her growing frustration she grasped at her final straw; "Well, you Catholics are the ones who crucified Jesus!" When I asked her to explain her rather desperate claim, her reasoning was such; "Jesus was crucified by Roman soldiers... and you're Roman Catholics!"
Of course, I just had to ask her who taught her that. And of course, it was her Fundie preacher.

Us Roman Catholics crucified Christ? O how I would love to play "Where Is That in the Bible?" with her preacher.
ReplyDeletePlus, I'd love to see how he would handle the fact that Roman Catholic Church is only of of 21 sui iuris Churches that make up the Catholic Church.
How they can continue to claim that they interpret the Bible literally, yet deny the very teachings of the Catholic Church that the Bible clearly upholds is beyond me.
It would be hysterically funny if it weren't so pathetic. I hope you set her straight, again!
ReplyDeleteCavey, just point her to any of us Odox, or even the Orient-Odox. If Rome "made all this up" why do us Catholics of the East believe the same things?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, point her to the Copts for example. Episcopate? St. Mark himself started it in Alexandria. Priesthood? Again St. Mark ordained them. 7 sacraments? Again it was St. Mark who gave them to the Egyptians. Liturgy? They use the one he taught them, and they added to it. They also use one named after St. James (I forget which one) if not composed by him. They refused to accept the council of Chalcedon and have been in schism with the rest of the Church since.
Now how could Rome have "invented" it all if the Copts do the same things?
That is one I have never heard before. Her preacher told her that? Wow
ReplyDeleteOkay, conversations like this make my head hurt. You have to be comended for patience. Maybe a seed will be planted in the woman's heart.
ReplyDeleteIt's people like you've mentioned that should make it a crime for stupidity
ReplyDeleteWow. For someone who claims to be so well-versed in Scripture, she sure is ignorant of the basic facts of the Crucifixion.
ReplyDeletefundy seminaries are called "bible colleges", and are not noted for academics.
ReplyDeleteMore than a few are not accredited by anyone.
I always like to ask if she will still believe that when she changes churches and her new minister tells her something different. Makes 'em squirm a bit.
ReplyDeleteWell, we ALL crucified Jesus given that He came to suffer such indignities for ALL of us. I always found it pretty darn humbling to think that if the world were filled with blameless souls except for me, and I even had the slightest tarnish of sin, He still would have come and suffered the Cross just for me.
ReplyDeleteAnd that tool, too.
Sorry, Lord, I am just having one of those days where Walter Sobchak remains my role model.
That would be hysterically funny if it weren't so incredibly sad!
