Well, Maybe He Won't Be Getting THAT MUCH Action
Marine banned from Prom

Here's the story from The Daily Herald;

21 too old for prom date, girl finds out

By Jack Komperda Daily Herald Staff

Jessica Pope has devoted the better part of this year to thinking about prom. The Glenbard East High School senior spent the past two months forgoing lunch so she could instead use that money for a dress. Weekends were spent babysitting to raise more cash.

Her boyfriend, a Marine stationed at Fort Lee, Va., received permission from his superiors to fly to Chicago for the weekend just for the dance. But the couple won't be attending tonight's event.

Officials at the Lombard school informed Pope, 18, that her 21-year-old boyfriend, Francisco Velasco, who grew up in Addison, is too old to attend the function. "The main reason is that 21 is a legal age for alcohol consumption and that's always a concern we have at proms," Glenbard East Principal Robert McBride said Friday.

Pope still can attend on her own, but she has decided to skip prom to spend time with her boyfriend. "I'm extremely, extremely, extremely upset," Pope said. "I've been looking forward to (prom) literally my whole life. I've been thinking about it all year … and planned everything out."

McBride conceded that Pope's permission form was less than clear about the age restrictions for student dates. Pope "received an older form that said no guest over the age of 21 could attend," McBride said.

"That left her with the impression that 21 is the maximum age," McBride said. "That was our mistake, giving her the outdated form." To help make up for the miscommunication, McBride said the school would refund Pope's two $75 tickets.

And according to Pope, school officials on Friday also promised to pay for her $125 prom dress. But the Glendale Heights teen will be on the hook for about $150 worth of expenses involved in the post-prom activities.

Joan Daniels, Pope's mother, said she was furious with the school district over the incident. "They didn't even bother to say 'I'm sorry,'" Daniels said. "The whole point of this prom was for my daughter and her boyfriend to attend together. "Now her memories will be ruined."
Never mind the fact that;

1. The school administators and chaperones are of legal age to consume alcohol. Are they banned from the Prom as well?

2. Does anyone really believe that they'll be serving booze? Common sense check: when I went to my Prom a million years ago, I managed to get booze... at the tender age of 17. I have a funny feeling that things haven't changes all that much. So this Marine being 21 is a moot point.

3. The young lady in question is 18. She's old enought to vote, buy a home, join the Armed Forces... but can't go to the Prom with her Marine boyfriend?

4. Concerning the School Board, is there a policy in place, or is this an arbitrary decision with ulterior motives? Oh, wait... they did notify that no one OVER the age of 21 could attend. This young Marine isn't over 21. But he's still been banned. Hmmm...

5. Her parents obviously don't have a problem with this. So why does the Principal?

I have a funny feeling this has a damn sight more to do with him being a member of the United States Marine Corps, than it does with him being 21.

  1. This is such bullshit! Do you think they would have relented if the young man was 20? No, then they'd say he couldn't come because he wasn't a student. or a student at their school, or a school in their district, etc., etc. Noooo, this liberal pinko communists were sacred to death that the young warrior would show up in his Dress Blues (what Marine wouldn't!). (No telling what it would have done at the local recruiting office when everry other girl asked her "date" why he wasn't a Marine!)

  3. Hello all. I'm reeling from Pascal Services last night (didn't get home until 5 am which was just a few hours ago and this year I spent it a a small Russian monastery and it was cramped as a submarine).

FAB is right, this is horse hockey! I'm too tired to say anything else.

    Christ is Risen!

  4. Oh dear Lord...I wonder if I have any BP meds left from when I was pregnant last year. Incredible. And not far from where I grew up.

Just walked past the recruiting center in Times Square during the field trip yesterday with an 8th grade boy who is itching to join and be in Crash Crew like my husband was for his 20. He stopped for a minute and took a long, serious look. Then he looked up at me and said quietly, "you know this is the one that got bombed, right?" I nodded, and he said, "that's why I want to join. And nobody in school understands it."

Got a bit misty, I admit. "I do," I said, "and the people who will matter most to you for the rest of your life do, too." I patted him once on the shoulder. He smiled a little shy boy smile at me and went back to the other kids.

Awards at my place for you in honor of my 100th post(take the first and last, skip the chick stuff)

  5. How true, FAB. And I can't help but wonder how the princilple would have reacted if her date was another girl?

  6. Well, then I think that the next time they need an expeditionary force to go to some third world cess pit--they should send the school administration.

What a bunch of Crap! It's not about the needs of the students, it's about the Aadministrters being the arbiters of life.

  7. This angers me. I totally agree with your points and with Altar Boy's comments. The school evidently thought it was more important to be PC than preserve a traditional memory for many young high school girls. Shame on them.

And double-shame, may-their-hairshirts-be-infested-with camel-fleas on anyone who is EMBARRASSED to have any military show up at their holier-than-thou events.

I usually strive to do the right thing, but if I was the girl, I would have tried to find a way to sneak in my handsome hunka-hunka-burnin' love into that gymnasium and then plop ourselves smack dab in the middle of the floor, slow dancing to our hearts content. Let them try to haul my butt out of there.

Makes me wonder what would have happened if the young man was 19 years old and a Marine. I'm sure they would have tried to find a way.

  8. Kit, I hear of young people enlisting all the time. Big Mouth Media doesn't speak for real America.

    Vir:
Regarding spending the holy season in a Russian monestary..I am jealous. I'm sure it was fantastic.

Regarding the girl with a girl date. You were right on target.

Time to start calling and emailing the school.

  9. Vir spel orthodoxae, "...it was cramped as a submarine"?

    Now I'm homesick.

  10. "Vir:

Sure was pretty, and pretty long, and half of it was in slavonic, and in tight quarters, no food or drink since the early afternoon, and a real test of faith: standing and singing for hours all night. Thank God for good ol' Pope Greg the Great for the Latin Mass making it shorter! Even if I don't get to use it. A few Russians use it, just not this one.

But what BS! Marines just get no respect.

  11. Yep, going to have to call bullshit on this one with y'all. If it was really about alcohol, why would they essentially force her out of the "supervised" environment of the prom and have her go off alone with this 21 year old Marine who can now more easily purchase alcohol for her?

Further more, if they really wanted to make sure that he wasn't going to buy alcohol for the kids, the principle needed only to have looked that Marine in the eye and asked for his word, as a Marine, that he not do so. End of concern. Will he dishonor Corp and Country for drink? I am betting the answer is a big "Hell no!" Even if that principle has never served in the military, he would have know this.

I am not a military man myself and even I know this much. Correct me if I am wrong, but I really don't think that I am. What I do know is that if you hold a young man to a high standard and let him know that you believe he can and will achieve it, a great many of those young men, will rise to the occasion.

  12. Gee, who can add to these comments, just about everything has been said. Bunch of left wing liberals in the schools couldn't stand a REAL role model showing up at the prom. FAB has it right!
