But The Militantly Anti-Catholic Atheist Still Skulks About In The Halls Of A Catholic School
Have you checked on your child's spiritual safety?
Ahhh... the more I look into the goings on at this particular Catholic school, the more interesting information I find. It turns out that their library offers something called the Accelerated Reader Program, which is used in many schools throughout the country. The goal is to assist children to read on there own level. For example: Mark and Mary are in the third grade. Mark reads at a 4th grade level, where as Mary only reads on a 2nd grade level. They are assigned to read books according to the level the individual tests. After completing the book, the student takes a quiz on the computer.
Commendable, ain't it? One would think.
Well, I went to their search index, and typed in the name of one Philip Pullman. Remember him? 10 of his books are listed by this particular Catholic school as available to Catholic schoolchildren. And to be perfectly honest, I don't really care how much some may claim that these certain 10 books are not part of the His Dark Materials trilogy, and therefore innocuous. Philip Pullman is a purveyor of evil and hatred... period.
He's the same individual who's proudly proclaimed "My books are about killing God" and "I'm an atheist. There's no God here. There never was". Amazing how he contradicts himself about killing God, then states that there is no God. How can he kill what he also denies the existence of? Typical of the arguments used by atheists.
But I digress, what I find to be particularly amazing is that his books are readily available at a Catholic school. Is it really asking so much that the publications of one who literally has his hatred for God and His Church dripping from his jowls, camouflaged as his hatred may be, kept away from impressionable young Catholic schoolchildren?
Is it really asking that much?
Is the Bishop drunk, or what?

ReplyDeleteIt's actually not as illogical as it sounds - I could write a book about killing unicorns, but it wouldn't mean they exist, or even that I believe they exist. It just wouldn't be a particularly good use of my time, IMHO.
I don't know if you ever read Dr. Mabuse's blog Kraalspace, but she did a review of his books about a year ago that shredded them very effectively on a purely literary basis. Go to http://kraalspace.blogspot.com and type "pullman" in the search box. It's a very amusing read. Be sure to read the combox too, as more is divulged there...
Oops - scroll down if you search Pullman on Kraalspace. It's the third one down. Mea maxima culpa - I forgot I had initially searched under the highly creative semi-expletive Dr. Mabuse used in the title (what can I say? It stuck with me)...
ReplyDeleteIt's not just this "Catholic" school, it's also many others that call themselves Catholic tehse days but aren't anymore. Chalk it up to the fruits (and nuts) of Second Vatican. As Catholic parents, sadly, we cannot trust just any old school calling itself Catholic--be they parochial or college--to provide a truly Catholic education for our children in these days of pop-culture relativism. That's why we must be alert and investigate what these schools teach and who they have teaching it. There are still some good ones out there, but we must be vigilant. If we can't find one that's truly Catholic, then homeschooling is the only way to go to make sure that we, as parents, are fulfilling our duty to provide a truly Catholic education for our kids. Thank you, Caveman, for providing an insight into this particular school. You may have saved many young souls. AMDG

It is a full time job to raise catholic children. Constantly in battle with what goes into their minds. I can handle the schools and the media. But how are we supposed to deal with it from the Priesthood.
ReplyDeleteHow do we instill respect for the faith, those that stand behind the altars at every mass when they either hint or outright cause scandal. Holy days don't have to be attended? It isn't a mortal sin? So I suppose Sundays are on the outs too. This particular priest is going to talk himself right out of a job. Is that the intention?
And there is still glass chalices' on the altar at St. Stans. Good grief. They just got that corrected at St. Mary last month. This was supposed to be changed out 4 years ago.
Oh the list goes on. So Pullman is openly hostile to Christians. I can take him on, but what about the openly hostile Religious whether they be nuns or priests. What about the openly hostile laity?

I didn't want to duplicate everything that i've said here, suffice it to say that i don't believe access to different ideas, and challenging ideas is in itself a bad or unchristian thing, and is in fact important for developing critical faculties.
I also wanted to put this query to the anti-Pullman camp:
Just out of interest, I wonder what folk who rail against Pullman think of something like the Superman comics and the DC Universe. I mean, they depict pagan gods alongside angels, aliens, and ‘meta-humans’, and give them all equal weighting. (I think Supergirl became an angel a while back, and an angel called Zauriel was a member of the Justice League of America.)
